Chapter 10 - "Making it happen yourself"

Chapter 10 is a new chapter, which we’ve written to inspire and help individuals who want to introduce new ways of working in their organisation, department or team. There’s also advice on “dealing with technology overload”. And we address the dangers of ineffective management leaving remote workers feeling cut off, or overworked and burnt out.

To be most successful, new working practices should be introduced as a cross-business strategy. But in many companies it is an individual – a function head perhaps, or a team supervisor, or an individual employee – who initiates the conversation about change. We offer practical tips on how to deal with resistance, encourage colleagues to become accountable, and get influential leaders on board, with new examples from Swiss Re, Royal Bank of Scotland, National Grid, Netflix and Shell.
